Stop 7: Tomb of Podacataro

Audio and Written Experience

This imposing funerary monument to Bishop Livio Podacataro was executed by Iacopo Sansovino, the renowned Florentine-born architect who resided in Venice. He served as proto— chief architect—to the Serenissima from 1529 until his death in 1570.

Constructed in Istrian stone with gilded figures and low reliefs, it honors Livio Podacataro, a theologian who served as archbishop of Nicosia in the Venetian colony of Cyprus from 1524 to 1552. In 2013, the monument underwent restoration to address blackening from smoke deposits and dust, earning the First Prize for Sculpture Restoration.
